snapping turtle

Run at Beaver Lake, then a walk down the Bog Trail with the camera. Lots of new ferns coming up.

First, a Mourning Cloak Butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa)..

In the bog, we saw lots of little fish, one handsome catfish, and a big turtle. The turtle’s shell was at least a foot long, maybe more. They say that snapping turtles live 30-40 years on average and they are New York’s official state reptile. This one is old and has algae growing on its head and tail. (Next time I’ll bring a polarizing filter for the camera!)
